Individual therapy

Individual therapy in Laguna Beach.

You already know what you'd do differently. So why doesn't it stick? That gap, between knowing and doing, is usually where the real work begins.

A single stand-up paddleboarder crossing a wide, glassy blue sea, with a hazy island low on the horizon.

Most people who come to me already know what they'd change. Eat better, set the limit, speak up, make the move. They've read the books and rehearsed the conversation in the shower. And still they keep landing back in the same spot, doing the thing they swore they were done with. If knowing were the same as doing, wouldn't you have this handled by now?

So the sticking point usually isn't information, and it isn't willpower. It's that the pattern is worn in deep, like a path your feet take without asking. You're not stuck because something's wrong with you. You're stuck because the old route is the one you know in the dark. That's where we start, together: finding the exact place the path forks, and practicing the turn until it's yours.

Who this is for

The knowing-better-but-stuck loop

You already have the insight

You don't need another article or a smarter plan. You can name the problem in your sleep. What you don't have yet is the thing that makes the better choice hold when the moment actually arrives.

The pattern is older than the problem

The habit you're fighting usually learned its job a long time ago, back when it was protecting something. That's why muscling through rarely lasts. You're arguing with a younger version of yourself who had real reasons.

Willpower keeps running out

Willpower is a sprint, and you've been asked to run a marathon on it. When the tank empties you slide back, and then you blame yourself for sliding. We work on the running, not the white-knuckling.

What to expect

How the work actually goes

We find the fork

First we get specific about where the pattern actually turns, the exact moment knowing gives way to the old default. You can't change a corner you can't yet see.

We work with the reason, not against it

Instead of shaming a pattern into submission, we get curious about what it has been doing for you. Patterns loosen when they feel understood, not attacked.

We practice until it holds

Change lives in reps, not revelations. We build small, repeatable experiments so the new turn becomes the one your feet know. That is what makes it stick.

None of this is improvised, by the way. The approaches we lean on, solution-focused therapy, CBT, ACT, and DBT, are among the most studied and best-supported methods in the field. That's not a promise about how your particular story turns out. It just means the work rests on something sturdier than good intentions.

Not everything we work on has a tidy label. A lot of it is the life transitions that rearrange everything at once: a career pivot, an empty nest, a move, a version of the future that quietly stopped being true. Steady footing while the ground shifts is its own kind of work.

And some of this goes better on the move. Walking the coastline, side by side, the conversation tends to loosen in a way it rarely does across a desk. Beach Therapy is the same one-on-one work, just outdoors, with the ocean taking a little of the pressure off. Ask about it on your call.

Who you'll work with

The fit matters more than the resume

One-on-one work is only as good as the person across from you. We're a small team that Kay personally trains and supervises, so whoever you see, the care holds the same standard. The free call is where we match you to the right one.

Questions people ask

Individual therapy, answered

I've tried therapy before and it didn't really help. Why would this be different?

That is worth talking about, not a reason to give up. When someone tells us therapy did not help before, we do not assume they were resistant. Usually it just was not the right fit. Fit is exactly what the [free Get to Know Us call](/get-started) is for.

How fast can I be seen?

Usually within 24 hours. We hold time for people who are ready to start rather than keeping a long waitlist. Start with a free 20-minute call, or call (949) 357-3587. Ready when you are. Mark up each page's FAQ block with FAQPage schema matching the visible text exactly. Resolve the three gold-flagged items (Christian-counseling claim, Beach Therapy scope, addiction-recovery clinician) before those pages publish.*

Should I consider medication, therapy, or both?

Which one is right for you? That's a conversation to have with your prescribing physician, not something we decide for you. Here's what therapy can offer either way: it addresses the patterns and the story underneath the symptom, which medication alone doesn't touch. Some clients do both. Some do just one. Either way, we're glad to work alongside whatever your medical team recommends.

Do I need to know exactly what is wrong before I reach out?

No. Most people who contact us cannot quite put it into words yet, and that is completely normal. You do not need a diagnosis or a tidy explanation to start. Figuring out what is actually going on is part of the work. The simplest first step is a [free 20-minute Get to Know Us call](/get-started). No pressure, no paperwork, just a conversation.

Ready to make it actually stick?

If you keep landing in the same spot, let's look at the fork together. A free 15 to 20 minute call is a low-pressure way to see whether we're the right fit for you.
