The same conflict, on every holiday
Certain topics, or certain people together in one room, and it's the same eruption every time. The calendar changes, the choreography doesn't.
Family therapy
Family counseling and parenting support for the hard seasons, in Laguna Beach or by telehealth across California. When the whole system is stuck, one person alone can't unstick it.
Think of a family as one of those mobiles that hang over a crib. Every piece is tied to every other piece, so when one part gets pulled, the whole thing swings, even the parts that were holding perfectly still. That's why the person who ends up in the most pain often isn't the source of the trouble. They're just the piece the tension is tugging on hardest.
So what happens when you try to fix a mobile by grabbing only the one swinging piece? It thrashes harder. Family therapy works differently. Instead of hunting for the person to blame, we watch how the whole thing moves together, and we help the family find a new balance that doesn't cost any one member their peace. Whose fault is it? Almost always the wrong question.
How family work is different
One-on-one therapy helps one person. Family therapy helps the space between people, which is a different kind of work with a different shape.
We don't gather in secret to decide who's the problem. When the family sits together, the pattern shows itself, and it stops being one person's fault and starts being something you can all change.
The blow-up, the shutdown, the person who always smooths it over, the one who always pushes. These are roles the system handed out. Once they're named out loud, they loosen their grip.
The goal isn't to win. It's a family where the weight is shared more fairly, the hard conversations can actually happen, and everyone gets to be a full person, not just their role.
What brings families in
Certain topics, or certain people together in one room, and it's the same eruption every time. The calendar changes, the choreography doesn't.
When a child's behavior suddenly turns loud, it's often the family's stress finding the most sensitive place to land. The behavior is a message, not just a problem.
Two parents, two playbooks, and a child who's learned to slip through the gap between them. Getting the adults on the same page changes everything downstream.
A divorce, a blended family, a move, an illness, a loss. Big changes ask every member to find a new place to stand, and that renegotiation is rarely smooth.
Sometimes the family doesn't all need to come in. Sometimes it's the parents who need a place to think, out loud, with someone who won't hand them a pamphlet. How do you hold a limit and stay warm at the same time? How do you parent the child you have, not the one the books assumed? We work with parents on exactly these questions, whether the rest of the family ever sets foot in the room or not.
Parenting in a high-pressure coastal community adds its own weather: the comparison, the packed schedules, the sense that everyone else has it handled. You don't have to have it handled. That's what the free call is for.
A particular thread
Some families arrive knowing the knot is really between two people. Mothers and adult daughters have their own version of this work, whether you're barely speaking, talking daily and still leaving every call frustrated, or close already and tired of one subject you both avoid. You don't have to wait until it's broken to ask for help.

Questions people ask
A family session gives everyone a chance to say the hard thing out loud, in a room built to hold it. So what actually changes? Usually not who's right, but how the whole family responds to each other once the pattern gets named instead of just repeated. Families who do this work usually come out of it with more patience for each other, not less.
Not necessarily. Family therapy is flexible. Sometimes everyone meets together, sometimes the therapist works with a pair or an individual for a session, depending on what will help most. Your therapist will shape it around your family.
No. Hunting for the guilty party is one of the few things almost certain not to help. When a family is stuck, it's usually a pattern doing the damage, a loop everyone is caught in, not one villain who needs catching. So we name the pattern instead of the person, which tends to loosen things for everyone, parents included. You came in as a family, and that's how we'll work: as a team, not a trial.
You don't need everyone on board to start. A free 15 to 20 minute call is a low-pressure way to talk through what's going on and see whether we're the right fit for your family.
