Discernment counseling
Discernment counseling.
For couples on the brink, one leaning out, one leaning in. A short, structured way to get clear before you make a decision this big. Pro-commitment, and never pro-pressure.
There's a particular kind of stuck that most couples counseling isn't built for. One of you has a foot out the door and is close to done. The other still wants to fight for it. Ordinary couples work assumes you both showed up to save the marriage, so it can quietly pressure the leaning-out partner and frustrate the leaning-in one. Sound familiar?
Discernment counseling is designed for exactly that mixed-agenda moment. It's short-term by design. Its goal is not to fix the marriage in a handful of sessions, and it is not to talk anyone into staying or leaving. The goal is clarity: understanding how you got here and what each path would actually ask of you, so that whatever you decide, you decide it with your eyes open.
Where we stand
Kay Wenger, LMFT, LPCC
Founder & Clinical Supervisor
I'm pro-commitment. I believe most marriages are worth a real, honest look before anyone walks away, and I've spent thirty years helping couples take that look. But pro-commitment is not the same as pressure. My job is not to keep you together at any cost.
As co-founder of the National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists, I hold two things at once: a genuine respect for the marriage, and a genuine respect for your right to decide. Sometimes couples leave discernment ready to work. Sometimes they leave able to part with less bitterness and more honesty. Both of those are good outcomes, because both of them are clear ones.

Discernment isn't about deciding for you. It's about turning the lights on so you can see the road before you choose one.

You can't live in the doorway forever. Discernment is a way to stand in it honestly, just long enough to choose.
The three paths
What you're actually choosing between
Discernment counseling doesn't add a fourth option or a secret trapdoor. It slows you down long enough to look clearly at the three real paths in front of every couple on the brink.
-
Path one: keep things as they are
Change nothing and stay on the current road. For most couples who make it to discernment, this is the path that already isn't working, which is exactly why you're here. Naming it honestly is its own kind of clarity.
-
Path two: move toward separation or divorce
Decide to part. If this is where you land, discernment helps you get there with more understanding and less scorched earth, which matters enormously, especially if you share children or a long history.
-
Path three: commit to a season of real work
Agree to a defined stretch of couples therapy, often around six months, with divorce off the table for that window and both of you all in, to see what the marriage can become when it's genuinely tended. Not forever. Long enough to know.
Is this you?
Who discernment counseling fits, and who it doesn't
- It fits when you're split One of you is leaning out, unsure the marriage can be saved, and the other is leaning in, still hoping. That gap is the exact situation discernment is built for.
- It fits when the pressure's on A decision feels close and the stakes are high, and you want to make it thoughtfully rather than in the heat of the worst week.
- It doesn't fit if you've decided If one of you has already firmly, quietly chosen divorce and is only here to soften the blow, discernment isn't the honest tool. We can point you toward what is.
- It doesn't fit in acute crisis Where there's ongoing abuse or immediate danger, safety comes before discernment. That is a different and more urgent kind of help, and we'll help you find it.
If discernment leads you to path three, the work continues in ongoing couples and marriage therapy, and we'll carry that momentum straight into it. And if it leads somewhere else, you'll leave knowing why, which is worth a great deal on its own. What would it be worth to stop guessing?

If you land on working on it
A couples intensive
Some couples who choose path three want to start with momentum, not a slow ramp. A focused day can do a lot of early work at once.

When an affair is part of the story, the repair has its own structured path. Our infidelity page walks through what recovery actually involves.
Infidelity and affair recoveryQuestions people ask
Discernment counseling, answered
What is couples counseling, and how can it help my relationship?
It's a chance for you and your partner to work through what's actually going on with someone trained to help you see the pattern, not just referee the argument. What does that actually look like? I'm pro-commitment, but I'm not attached to a particular outcome, and the work goes best when both of you are willing to look at the relationship as a system you're both part of, not a courtroom where one person is on trial. We also offer Discernment Counseling if you're not yet sure whether to work on the relationship or part ways.
Can a relationship actually survive an affair?
Yes, many do. It is hard, and it takes honesty and time from both people, but affairs do not automatically mean the end of a relationship. With the right support, a lot of couples rebuild trust, and some describe their relationship afterward as more honest than it was before. This work is part of our [couples therapy](/therapy/couples), and for couples who want to move faster, a [couples intensive with Kay](/couples-intensive) can help.
Do we have to decide whether to stay together before we start?
No. A lot of couples come in not knowing yet, and that is allowed. The early work is about stabilizing things and understanding how you got here, not forcing a verdict. Some couples rebuild, some decide to part with more clarity and less bitterness. Either way, you don't have to have the answer before you walk in.
Not sure whether to stay or go?
You don't have to have the answer to reach out. A free 15 to 20 minute call is a low-pressure way to talk it through and see whether discernment counseling is the right next step for you both.
Free and confidential. Be seen within 24 hours.
