Couples Intensives.

A focused day with Kay Wenger for couples who want to move further, faster than weekly sessions allow. Four to eight hours, one couple, one uninterrupted stretch of real work.

  • 4 to 8 hours in a single day
  • One-on-one with Kay Wenger
  • In Laguna Beach or by telehealth

You know the shape of a weekly session. You finally get to the thing that matters, the room warms up, one of you says the honest sentence, and the timer goes off. Next week you spend the first twenty minutes finding your way back to where you were. Is it any wonder some conversations never seem to finish?

An intensive changes the math. Instead of asking a couple to keep starting the hard conversation and stopping it mid-sentence, we set aside a whole day and follow the thread all the way down. You don't need more weeks. Sometimes you just need more room.

Founder & Clinical Supervisor

An intensive is a day I set aside for one couple and nothing else. No phone, no next appointment pressing on the hour. We sit down with what actually keeps happening between you, and we stay with it long enough to get somewhere real.

As co-founder of the National Registry of Marriage Friendly Therapists, I've spent more than thirty years in rooms with couples, a lot of them in genuine crisis. Here is what those years taught me: some knots don't come undone fifty minutes at a time. What you need then isn't another month of appointments. It's uninterrupted time, and someone who won't look away from the hard part.

  • 30-plus years with couples in crisis and repair
  • NRMFT co-founder and CEO
  • 4 to 8 hours in a single focused day
  • Pro-commitment never pro-pressure

A weekly hour keeps you afloat. A full day is where a couple can actually change the boat.

The shape of the day

How an intensive unfolds

A day is long enough to do this in sequence, without rushing any part of it. Here is the arc most intensives follow.

  1. We start with the whole picture

Before we fix anything, we get it all on the table: what each of you is carrying, how the pattern actually runs, and what you're each hoping is different by the time you drive home. No rush, and no taking sides.

  2. We go where the weekly hour can't

With a full day instead of a sliver of one, we can follow the argument down to what's really underneath it and stay through the tender part, the place a weekly session usually has to stop just as it gets honest.

  3. We do the repair, not just the diagnosis

Understanding how you got here matters, but a day gives us time to practice something different in the room, so you leave having actually done the new thing once, not just talked about it.

  4. We build the plan you take with you

We close by naming what changes when you get home, and whether ongoing work, a follow-up, or one of our other pathways makes sense. You leave with a direction, not just a big feeling.

Who it's for

When a day makes more sense than a season

Couples at a crossroads

A big decision is close, and the weekly pace can't keep up with it. A day lets you get real clarity before the moment forces your hand.

Rebuilding after betrayal

Affair recovery has a lot of early, stabilizing work, and an intensive can carry a good deal of it at once, so you're not left alone with it between sessions.

Starting strong

Engaged or newly committed couples use an intensive as a premarital head start, building the habits most couples only learn the hard way, years in.

Is an intensive right for everyone? Honestly, no. If either of you is in acute crisis, or safety is a concern, a different level of care comes first, and we'll help you find it. An intensive works best when both people are willing to spend a day looking honestly at the relationship as something you're both part of, not a courtroom where one of you is on trial.

Intensives are scheduled directly with Kay, and the length (anywhere from four to eight hours) depends on what you're working on. Ongoing weekly couples and marriage therapy is available too, and the intensive can sit alongside it or stand on its own. The simplest first step is the free call, where we sort out which shape fits.

Questions people ask

Couples intensives, answered

What is couples counseling, and how can it help my relationship?

It's a chance for you and your partner to work through what's actually going on with someone trained to help you see the pattern, not just referee the argument. What does that actually look like? I'm pro-commitment, but I'm not attached to a particular outcome, and the work goes best when both of you are willing to look at the relationship as a system you're both part of, not a courtroom where one person is on trial. We also offer Discernment Counseling if you're not yet sure whether to work on the relationship or part ways.

Can a relationship actually survive an affair?

Yes, many do. It is hard, and it takes honesty and time from both people, but affairs do not automatically mean the end of a relationship. With the right support, a lot of couples rebuild trust, and some describe their relationship afterward as more honest than it was before. This work is part of our [couples therapy](/therapy/couples), and for couples who want to move faster, a [couples intensive with Kay](/couples-intensive) can help.

Do we have to decide whether to stay together before we start?

No. A lot of couples come in not knowing yet, and that is allowed. The early work is about stabilizing things and understanding how you got here, not forcing a verdict. Some couples rebuild, some decide to part with more clarity and less bitterness. Either way, you don't have to have the answer before you walk in.
